Brassiness is a problem that everyone who lighens or colours their hair struggles with. You are not alone and you can fix this at home!
To fix brassiness, first you need to work out what level your hair is (how light or dark your hair is). Use the picture below to work out your hair level.
Next, use the colour wheel below and find which unwanted colour you're seeing in your hair. Directly across from that colour is the colour which will cancel out your unwanted colour. You need to find products with this colour to fix the brassiness in your hair.
For example, if you're seeing unwanted yellow tones, the colour directly across from this is purple so any purple product will cancel out that yellow!
Now that you know your hair level, and the colour which counteracts your unwanted colour - you can find products specifically for you! Just look for anything at your level containing the colour you need.
For example, if you're a level 8 seeing a lot of orange tones you would look for a colour with a number starting with 8 which contains blue tones.
Level 9/10 can use any of the Wella Colour Charm Permanent Toners.
A toner is a product which corrects unwanted pigments in the hair.
The underlying tones in your hair are generally warm (yellow, orange or red). A toner will counteract these tones and leave you with your desired shade (ash, pearl, beige etc).
Permanent Toners are perfect for blondes looking to reduce warmth while giving a slight lightening effect. These will leave you with beautiful brass free hair in a variety of gorgeous shades.
Demi-Permanent Colour can also be used to tone hair of all levels - from very light to very dark. Look at the ash colours in the demi-permanent range as these are the shades which will target brasssiness.
Keracolor Colour + Clenditioner is a gentle, in-shower toning product which adds semi permanent pigments in to your hair while you wash it. This is perfect for maintenance or adding fun colours like silver, rose gold or light pink.
Developer is a product containing hydogen peroxide which activates your colour or toner. Developer can also be called peroxide or activator.
Activating Lotion / Creme: This product will have very little lift (if any) and is used with demi/semi permanent colours.
10 Vol: This product will very slightly (0 - 0.4 levels) lift the hair and is used with toner, demi/semi permanent colours.
20 Vol: This product will lift the hair 1 level and give permanent results. This is used with permanent toner or colour, and also with bleach/lightener when applying to the scalp. For grey coverage, use 20 Vol.
30 Vol: This product will lift the hair approximately 2 levels and can be used with permament high lift colour or bleach/lightener.
40 Vol: Tint Department does not recommend 40 Vol.
