Demi-permanent hair colour (or hair dye - they’re the same thing) is a great choice if you’re looking for a gentle, damage free way to colour your hair. You can use demi permanent colour to tone, gloss, refresh or enhance your hair colour. This guide will help you to understand which demi permanent colour is right for you!

Are Demi Permanent and Semi Permanent The Same Thing?

Demi Permanent and Semi Permanent Hair Colours are similar, but they are not the same thing.

Semi Permanent colours sit on the surface of the hair (think like a foundation on your face) and do not alter the hair. An example of a semi permanent colour is a colour mask that you use in the shower. These are temporary colours.

Demi Permanent colours alter the first layer of your hair, so last longer (typically 12-24 washes) and slightly alter the hair. Demi Permanent colours are a great choice for colouring hair when you’re concerned about damage or are looking for a gentle way to tone your hair.

Demi Permanent colours are mixed with developer, where Semi Permanent colours are not.

Is Demi Permanent Hair Colour Less Damaging?

Demi Permanent Hair Colours are less damaging than permanent colours. This is due to two things; the formula and the developer used.

Which Developer Do I Use With Demi Permanent Hair Colour?

Demi Permanent Hair Colour needs to be mixed with developer. Developer (sometimes also referred to as peroxide) is used to activate your hair colour. Without it the colour will do absolutely nothing!

You want to mix your Demi Permanent Hair Colour with a low strength developer. I recommend 5 Vol (1.5%) as this is the most gentle developer. You can also mix your Demi Permanent Hair Colour with 10 Vol, which is also a gentle option but can lighten hair very slightly.

Does Demi Permanent Colour Have Ammonia?

The Wella Colour Charm Demi Permanent Hair Colours do not contain ammonia.

Ammonia is a useful chemical in hair colouring, as it allows for more of the hair colour to enter your hair shaft, making your results longer lasting. However, ammonia can cause irritation in some people and can be damaging to already compromised hair.

If you’re looking for an ammonia free hair colouring option - the Wella Colour Charm Demi Permanent Hair Colours are a great choice for you!

Can I Use Demi Permanent Colour As A Toner?

Demi Permanent Hair Colour can be used as a toner - it’s a great option!

If you think of a toner simply as something that addresses and corrects a problem colour you’re seeing in your hair, you’ll realise that many products can be toners - those specifically called Toners, Permanent Colours and Demi Permanent Colours can all be used as toners.

Using a Demi Permanent Colour as a toner is ideal if you’re looking to stay the same level (a level is just how light or dark your hair is) or if you’re looking to go darker.

Can Demi Permanent Colour Cover Grey?

Demi Permanent Hair Colours do not cover grey hair, but they do blend it in. Blending your greys in with your hair will allow it to look softer (more like babylights). A Demi Permanent Hair Colour will not create a harsh regrowth line, so you will be able to get away with colouring your hair less!

Will Demi Permanent Colour Lighten Hair?

Demi Permanent Hair Colour will not lighten your hair, especially when used with 5 Vol Developer.

Demi Permanent Colour often gives you a deeper result than Permanent Colour, so keep this in mind when choosing your shade.

How Long Does Demi Permanent Hair Colour Last?

Demi Permanent Hair Colour lasts between 12-24 washes. I recommend refreshing your colour every 4 weeks.
